November 11, 2017 – Highland Center Walk at 9:00 AM COMPLETED ON SCHEDULE
Our birding walks are scheduled on the second Saturday of every month. Experienced Prescott Audubon birders lead these outings, always on the site of the Highland Center for Natural History. The walks are about 2 hours long, and they are open to birders of all ages and levels. Meet at 9:00 AM at the Highland Center, 1375 S Walker Rd, in Prescott. Walker Road meets Hgwy 69 next to Costco, and the Highlands Center is a few miles down Walker Rd from there. No need to register; everyone is welcome.
Please note: This will be our last HCNH bird walk for 2017. We begin our monthly walks again in February, 2018.
Friday, December 1, 2017 – Saturday, December 9, 2017 – Trinidad & Tobago COMPLETED ON SCHEDULE
COMMENTS: Trinidad and Tobago (T & T, as it’s known) offers an excellent tropical birding experience, complete with views and gardens to interest non-birding partners as well. A five-night stay at the famous Asa Wright Lodge in Trinidad will include birding trips around the island as well as great viewing from the lodge veranda, a visit to the Oilbird cave, a boat tour of the Caroni Swamp, and more. Our 3 nights in Tobago include a day trip to Little Tobago Island and a lovely stay at Cuffie River Lodge. $2100 covers the trip costs (double occupancy) including the inter-island flights. We will be hosting four (Yes, 4!) Christmas Bird Counts in our Chapter area.

Monday, January 1, 2018 — New Year’s Day Field Trip! Start your 2018 bird list off in good company! COMPLETED ON SCHEDULE
This has been a popular field trip for the past few years, when weather permits! We will bird the most productive spots around Prescott starting at a sensible 9 AM. We try to be done by noon, but some of us continue into the afternoon if the birding is good. (Bring your lunch.) Friday, Jan 19 – Sunday Jan 21 — Overnight trip to the Salton Sea COMPLETED ON SCHEDULE
We’ll travel to the Salton Sea on the 19th, ready to spend the next day with a terrific local guide, Bob Miller, on the 20th. We will bird the morning of the 21st along the Salton Sea before heading home that afternoon. It has been a good while since PAS has led a Salton Sea trip, so we are eager to return to what just may be the most amazing winter birding hotspot in the deep Southwest. Shorelines and farm fields full of shorebirds, ducks, gulls, grebes, herons, and songbirds – all in the odd and salt-caked environs that is the Salton Sea. Thursday, February 8th, 2017 – Estrella Park (and the Glendale Recharge Ponds?) THIS FIELD TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED
Birding in early February? Time for another winter day trip to the Phoenix area! This year, leader Rich Schooler will guide us through the Estrella Mt. Park, in Goodyear ($6/vehicle entrance fee). Target species are desert and water birds of the Sonoran desert and mesquite bogs. The park is large, with many trails, rest facilities, and picnic areas, and it has a great reputation for quality winter birding. If time permits, we hope to stop by the Glendale Recharge Ponds as well. TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Tuesday, March 13 – Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix COMPLETED ON SCHEDULE
Birding is outstanding in this lovely oasis of desert plants, and March brings some beautiful spring blooms as well. We’ve chosen the 13th because it is the monthly free day at the garden. Birds here are accustomed to people, and the gardens are wonderful, so bring your camera!

Tuesday, March 27 – Birding in Congress, AZ COMPLETED ON SCHEDULE
As last year, we will tour the very birdy town of Congress, with lunch after at (our favorite) Nichols West restaurant. Spring comes early in Congress, and the desert birds are out and singing in March. This trip is mostly a driving tour, no hiking required, and a good way to get more familiar with Curve-billed Thrashers, Gila Woodpeckers, Gilded Flickers, and the like — species not found in Prescott.

Thursday, April 5 – Spring at Stricklin Park COMPLETED ON SCHEDULE
“Our” natural park, Stricklin Park in Prescott near Thumb Butte Rd., has so much to offer in such a tiny space! From Cooper’s Hawks to Bridled Titmouse and warblers, the birds will be vocal and visible in spring. The trail is easy and partially paved. Kathy Wingert will lead this 2-hour bird walk.

Please join the Prescott Audubon Granite Creeks Cleanup Team on Saturday, April 21, 9:00 AM to noon.
The Granite Creek Cleanup, organized by Prescott Creeks, has become a rite of spring for the Prescott community, offering families, groups, adults, kids, and the kid in all of us to get out and get a bit dirty cleaning up our creeks. Share the day, and celebrate our creeks and surrounding wild places, with your friends and neighbors!
Registered participants receive an event T-shirt along with snacks being provided. Come out and enjoy a morning of feel-good, family-friendly activities and the satisfaction of making a difference for our community.

These IBS’s represent citizen science at its best, and the Upper Verde is absolutely beautiful. This is a full-morning trip and involves some challenging riverside hiking. This annual birding and nature festival offers field trips in the Cottonwood region and attracts participants from all over the country. Several of the trips are led by our Prescott Audubon leaders.

This will be our second 2018 opportunity to visit the awesome Verde River for both fun and to do some meaningful citizen science. (see April 25, above). In mid-May, most of our high-mountain breeding birds are back and singing as they establishes their territories. We will spend a morning looking and listening, most likely up Senator Highway. We’ll look for Red-faced and Virginia’s Warblers, Painted Redstarts, and Greater Pewee.

At this time each year, we head uphill to escape the heat and to search for Mingus Mt. specialties, including Broad-tailed Hummingbirds, Hermit Thrush, Red-breasted Nuthatch, and high country warblers such as Red-faced, Grace’s, and, if we’re lucky.

We will conduct two surveys this fall, dividing into three teams to cover the entire length of Granite Creek in Watson Woods. Although flat, there are no trails so expect some bushwhacking. Also, some creek crossing, and there may be water in the creek. Each survey takes about 2 hours. Optional social time after at Wildflower Bread Co.

In October, as the autumn migration slows in Prescott, our thoughts wander downhill in hopes of finding lingering birds and butterflies. We’ll be arriving at the Hassayampa River Preserve in Wickenburg at 9:00 AM, in time for a 2-hour guided walk with Eric Hough, the Preserve’s resident biologist/birder.
We can continue on our own a bit after, and likely do lunch (optional) in Wickenburg before heading home.

Yuma warms from winter to spring in February, so there is much to see, from waterfowl, herons, and rails on Mittry Lake to Costa’s Hummingbirds and wintering songbirds in the riverside parks, to raptors in the farm fields.
Participants should plan to be in Yuma by 3 PM Tuesday and must arrange their own lodging for Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Just an hour’s drive away is the tiny, birdy town of Congress, AZ. This trip was a great introduction to the desert-dwelling bird specialties of Yavapai County. It involved very little walking, we spotted most of the birds from our vehicles right in town. We were looking for Crissal Thrasher, Gilded Flicker, Pyrrhuloxia, Inca Dove and Harris’s Hawks, among others.
Lunch was at the popular Nichols West restaurant tops off the morning.

Saturday, April 6, 2019 – Page Springs and Bubbling Ponds

We will travel to the Arizona Game and Fish property located in the heart of Page Springs, between Cottonwood and Sedona. Averaging around 3500 Ft. elevation, and with Oak Creek flowing right through the property, this is a hot spot for year-round bird diversity (246 eBird species). We will leave Prescott at 6:30 and try to bird all three sections of the property. Afterward, we’ll have lunch (optional) at Up The Creek Bistro—Wine Bar.

This was such a great trip in 2017, we’re did it again! It’s prime migration time along this wide corridor of Cottonwood trees beside the Verde River near Old Cottonwood town. Think tanagers, warblers, orioles, and so much more. We birded in the morning, then head into Old Cottonwood for a restaurant lunch.

This was a great trip last year so we’re went again! In October as the migration slows in Prescott, we head downhill in search for lingering birds and butterflies.
We arrived at the Preserve in Wickenburg at 9:00 AM, for a 2-hour guided walk with Eric Hough, the Preserve’s resident biologist/birder. We continued on our own afterwards, and did lunch (optional) in Wickenburg before heading home.
Total guiding and park access fee for the group was $80, split between participants. Entrance to the Preserve was $5.
